Weathering steel with a naturally rusted finish
Weathering steel with a natural rusty finish is a natural material that can withstand the harshest conditions
We at AHL think Corten steel is great because it makes our work timeless, well, timeless. Like everyone else, we love the warm, natural look of rust. Unlike mild steel, which rusts when placed in elements, weathering steel forms a protective coating on its surface when exposed to bad weather. The protective layer prevents steel from rusting. The surface continues to regenerate itself each time it encounters bad weather, forming its own protective coating and our lovely rusty finish. Amazing.
We know some cool things about working with Corten Steel...
The tensile strength of weathering steel is twice that of mild steel.
When exposed to bad weather, it oozes rust on the surrounding surface.
There is no way to seal the rust or prevent it from seeping into the surrounding surface.
The color and surface will vary according to the elements it is exposed to.
At AHL, we have sheet thickness of 1.6mm to 3mm as well as large size sheet and 6mm sheet for us to make beautiful things.
Safe structural welding requires super special imported, BHP specified low carbon welding wire.
Special welding techniques are required to ensure that the solder joints corrode at the same rate as the steel.
If the steel is sandblasted before rusting, a more uniform rusted surface can be achieved.
Rusted surface treatment can also be achieved faster by sandblasting before rusting.
We provide pre-rusted all sculptures and screens and remove all oil and stains from Koten prior to our rusting method. Note, however, that we cannot control the color of a rusted finish, as it is a naturally occurring chemical reaction and will constantly change and develop over time.
Rust - It can rub against your hands, leach stains in bad weather, and can infect any other metal it comes in contact with. But a rusty surface is a natural surface. It will appreciate changes in pattern and color and will mature deeply with age. You can change its appearance, it will revert to its natural state, you can block it, you can delete it. But don't be fooled. Rust Never Sleeps We recommend one of our block faux finishes as an alternative to natural rust finishes for interior finishes and applications.
