Corten Steel: Rustic Charm Meets Durability in Urban Architecture&Design
Corten steel is a kind of steel that can resist air rust, compared with ordinary steel added copper, nickel and other anti-corrosion elements, so it is more corrosion-resistant than ordinary steel plate. With the popularity of corten steel, it is more and more appearing in urban architecture, becoming an excellent material for landscape sculpture. Providing them with more design inspiration, the unique industrial and artistic atmosphere of corten steel is increasingly becoming the new favourite of architects.

Why does corten steel stand out in the new wave of architectural design?
Corten steel's vintage, rustic look
As a tribute to history and culture, industrial-style architecture has become increasingly popular in recent years. More than a mere building, it can almost carry the rise, development and decline of a period of industrial history. And in this, corten steel becomes an important carrier for us to connect with history. Firstly, the colour of corten steel changes over time, often taking on a rusty red or reddish-brown hue, which lends a sense of timelessness to the building. Secondly, the rough texture on the surface of corten steel due to oxidation and rusting makes the building visually present a primitive, natural and untouched aesthetic, which can well show its primitive, rugged and unconventional style.
Outstanding corrosion resistance of corten steel plate
The rust on the surface of corten steel develops over time. In addition to serving as a rough surface, this layer of rust plays a more important role in protecting the inside of the corten steel from erosion from the outside, which allows it to be lasting and durable.Research results show that the lifespan of corten steel is 5-8 times longer than that of ordinary steel.
Corten steel's strong moulding ability
Through heat treatment and cold working, corten steel can take on a variety of unique forms, from smooth curves to rigid straight lines, from abstract shapes to figurative details, almost any shape can be realised with corten steel. This steel's ability to shape forms is not only reflected in the detailing, but also in the shaping of the overall form. Whether it is a large-scale sculpture or a small work of art, corten steel is able to perfectly present the desired form and texture.
Corten steel has a distinctive ability to define space
Corten steel, after appropriate treatment, can form a structure with both strength and toughness, thus effectively defining and dividing space. In architecture and interior design, corten steel is widely used for structural frames, partitions, suspended ceilings, etc., providing flexible and efficient spatial solutions with its strong yet lightweight properties. At the same time, corten steel also plays an important role in landscape design, through shaping landscape sculpture, installation art and other ways to create a sense of space and three-dimensional sense of public space.
Corten steel plate is an environmentally friendly steel
Corten steel is a kind of environmentally friendly steel, its production and use of the process of minimal impact on the environment. Firstly, the production process of corten steel adopts energy and resource-saving production methods, and its carbon emissions are greatly reduced compared with traditional steel production. Secondly, corten steel also has environmental advantages during its use. Due to a dense layer of rust on its surface, which effectively prevents the penetration of oxygen and other substances, weathering steel does not require painting or other additional maintenance during long-term use, thus reducing the environmental impact of paints and other substances. In addition, corten steel can be recycled, further reducing resource wastage and environmental pollution. Weathering steel is therefore an ideal environmentally friendly material that helps to promote the process of sustainable development.
Appreciate the world-famous cases of corten steel used in architecture:
A Ferrum 1 office building:
Located on the right bank of the Neva River opposite Smol'nyy Cathedral. Designed by Sergei Tchoban, this building was one of the first in Russia to be constructed with a sculptural corten steel façade. The corten steel panels used on the building's façade curve up and down, seemingly overlapping each other to create a bamboo basket-like weave. Perfectly suited to its factory predecessor, the corten steel's vintage rusty red colour effectively shows its deep industrial deposits, and one can understand the building's past life and present life without too much elaboration.
B Vanke 3V Gallery:
Located in the beautiful coastal city of Tianjin, this building was designed by Singaporean firm Ministry of Design. The unique weathering properties of corten steel are perfectly suited to the warm and humid climate of the seaside, which is conducive to the development of protective rust on the surface of the weathering steel, which better protects the deep structure of the corten steel and the interior of the building from external corrosion, which is a clear indication of the ingenuity of the designers.
